t610

My first real mobile phone was a Ericsson t610. (I had some a couple of motorola's before that, but they were clunky and it was a shared device between my wife and me)
When the t610 first came out I thought it had awkward proportions. I bought it because it was one of the first mass market phones with bluetooth. I carried that phone around for ever. To the point that the joystick started failing. It was cool, I downloaded sailing clicker and could do all kinds of stuff with the phone and my powerbook. Ericsson phones and macs seem to play very nice and there is a big developer community for shareware apps.
When I was interviewing for a job post-uniden, I would use it as a remote control for my slides. I came to love the industrial design. It had major separation anxiety when I finally replaced it. I still believe that if you could cut the thickness of the t610 in half and re-release it it would be a great device, even today. I prefer a small hi-res screen with a tiny package over bigger device with a bigger screen. If I had not moved to Long Island, I maybe would be still using it.

welcome

I have been working for Kaleidoscope (Kaleidoscope is a product development consulting firm) for almost three years. Before that I worked for Uniden for almost 10. In the course of those 10 years, I designed lots of cordless phones, in addition to that there were some pagers and mobile phones (mostly amps) along the way too.
Since being at Kaleidoscope, I have been involved in a lot of mobile computer designs for Symbol, now Motorola. Those devices run windows mobile and there are always variants that have WAN radios.
That as background, I feel from a usability and design perspective I know a thing or two about wireless communications. I have had lots of opinions on the subject and think I finally have found a source for recording them.
Welcome to my mobile blog. As much as possible, I am going to try and post from mobile devices.
